For everyone who, like me, has bothered to read the first collection of essays on which the Sex and the City TV show was based, it was clear that the connection was minimal, that the show actually created those characters and story lines out of thin air (well, say 99% of them), and that Bushnell got very lucky with an mega international hit only incidentally based on her book.This sequel is not actually a sequel. It is a touching memoir of Bushnell herself after her divorce, written in a casual style, worthy say, of 3 stars out of 5, but full of very interesting insights about the life of the affluent or once affluent women of NYC who are suddenly over 50 and alone and who made Bushnell's posse (entirely different characters than Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha).Bushnell and her girlfriends go on Tinder, get seduced by cubbing (dating very young men), endure the lows of life and rebound, and in the end find their new boyfriends in the wealthy circuit of the Hampton's parties where some men, very few, still look for an equal of appropriate age. But how many women have access to the Hampton's party circuit of the mega rich?So if you expect some sort of continuation of the TV series, the title is just a marketing ploy designed to migrate the audience of her show to buy this book. Bushnell admits she had a different title and the publisher opted for this one.These things established, I was able to read the memoir in only one day and to enjoy it, which is more than I can say about most books these days. As someone who has lived on the Upper East Side as a writer for 20 years and loved it, there are many exaggerations, as well as many omissions, yet overall it is real. It was interesting the foray on Tinder, reminded me of the novel My Life on Craigslist. Tinder like Craigslist is shown as a total wreck for women's dignity and humanity.On a personal note, I was touched to read in a recent profile in the NYT that this very successful author lives alone with two big dogs in a one bedroom apt where she starves herself to almost malnutrition to keep rail thin, and that, apart from Botox and her diet, she has a life not that different than the one I used to live.I am a fan of Bushnell, and I purchased this book, unlike the other people who received the free review copy. I will keep it for sentimental reasons.
I received an ARC of ‘Is There Still Sex in the City’ through NetGalley and Grove Atlantic in exchange for an honest review.I thought ‘Is There Still Sex in the City’ by Candace Bushnell was a quick and light read. I loved the references of living in New York while handling relationship struggles during mid-life. It also made me reflect back to my years of living in NYC during my early-mid 30s. I myself was suddenly single during part of this time, and I could relate during the ‘online dating’ exploration chapter! The book is set between the Upper East Side in New York, and an upstate enclave known as the ‘Village’, where stories of finding love in older men and experiencing love in times of life crises emerge.I didn’t particularly find ‘Is There Still Sex in the City’ a riveting story, but it was enjoyable to reflect back to Candace Bushnell’s ‘Sex in the City’ series. I have yet to read Bushnell’s other stories, but I would love to in the near future. I’ve been feeling intense feelings of nostalgia for New York City, since I certainly learned much about myself as an individual during that time period.If you love reading about long lasting friendships while surviving life in the big city, this book is for you!
I actually found this book rather boring. It felt like the author was trading on her past success with her past books and churning out something to bring in a paycheck based on her name. Or maybe it's just me. Not every book is for every reader and this one wasn't for me
